New Console from Sega
By tgantzler
Game Art and Design with Todd Gantzler

At $80 this new console isn't designed to compete witht he big 3, but it could be good value.  The Sega Zone will launch with 16 classic Sega games and 30 other Sega titles.  It will also run the old Sega Genesis cartridges.  The console uses a irless controller that looks like a Wiimote. - http://www.damnlag.com/articles/industry-news/401-sega-back-at-making-conso les-the-sega-zone.htmlTodd GantzlerFacultySessions Online School of Game Art

PS3 Hacked?
By tgantzler
Game Art and Design with Todd Gantzler

The PlayStation 3 has for most of it's life remained unhacked.  That's over 3 years that the system has remained secure.  This means that PS3 games were never pirated, and quite likely have not been pirated still.  However the hacker who  was the first to break Apple’s iPhone 3.0 firmware now claims to have been the first to hack the PS3.  - http://www.mcvuk.com/news/37281/PS3-hack-claims-gather-paceTodd GantzlerFacultySessions Online School of Game Art

Apple is good at making the most tempting devices.  This just looks like something I'd like to own.  You can get into an iPad for as low as $499, with high-end models at $699.  Basic models will be available in 2 months in North America.  How do they connect to the internet?  Wifi I would imagine, possibly some mobile connection... 3G versions will arrive in around 3 months.  Internet service from AT&T will start at $14.99 per month, unlimted use at 29.99.  This all sounds very interesting.Todd GantzlerFacultySessions Online School of Game Art

Fundamentally Useful Things to Know

Digital Photography with Ken Milburn

The following is a collection of different types of advice that I find my students continually asking for more information about. That leads me to beleive that it's information that worth habitually putting into practice. When shooting product shots and other "still lifes," as a rule, try to move in closer and fill even more of the frame with the object in question. Center the object *only* if it's to be a product shot that may have to be cropped for a variety of different layouts.  Generally speaking though (and there are "exceptions" to almost every rule in photography) our eye find a picture much more interesting when the positioning of the main subject is done according to the "rule of thirds." The latest set of cards for Magic: The Gathering releases Feb. 5.  Pre-release events will be held this weekend.  I've written in the past about the insights into balancing and gameplay for digital games that can be gained from playing this popular card game.  I hope to write about these ideas more often in the future. - http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/productarticle.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/worldwake/pr oductinfoTodd GantzlerFacultySessions Online School of Game Art
